Other Research

I’m open to enquiries about freelance research in medieval Latin textual scholarship, e.g.:

Checking a text against the MSS

Editions of medieval Latin texts often contain errors that can be corrected by checking the manuscripts. If you’d like to be able to cite a certain passage without worrying that you might be building a castle on sand, I can use some or all of the available manuscripts to produce a more reliable edition of it for you.

Interpreting/emending a passage

Some passages are difficult because they contain mistakes (editorial, scribal or authorial) or stubborn ambiguities or unusual constructions. As an editor and a lexicographer, I can usually resolve such difficulties. (NB: not all puzzles can be definitively solved, and there may be residual uncertainty.)

Locating material on your topic

A huge number of unexplored sources can now be searched online. If you’re looking for material on a certain topic and it would be inefficient for you to sift through a pile of search results, I can do this for you. If you like, I can also give you a preliminary analysis of any resulting findings (see Testimonials below).

Prices

Small tasks are £60/hour (minimum charge £25). Larger ones are £300/day, £1000/week, £4K/month.
