Teaching

I teach medieval Latin to PhD students, postdocs, and others who need it for their research.

Timing flexible and negotiable

This is an ad hoc service, not a scheduled course. If you want weekly, fortnightly or monthly sessions, I can do that. If you want a one-off session for a particular purpose – e.g. going through a passage or revising a construction – I can do that. Just get in touch and we can discuss your requirements. Most of my teaching is online, but if you’re in or east of Oxford, we may be able to meet in person.

Material tailored to your needs

As a lexicographer, I’m familiar with texts of all kinds – charters, letters, poems, wills, chronicles, glosses, sermons, treatises, accounts, you name it – so we can look at what you need for your research, rather than ploughing through material thats only indirectly useful. That said, the closer you are to being a beginner, the more generic the teaching will be.

Exam coaching

If you’re working towards a qualification – e.g. Toronto Level I/II Medieval Latin, or GCSE or AS/A Level Classical Latin – I can go through past papers, textbooks etc. with you (as appropriate) and make sure you’re on track to do well in the exam.

Palaeography and textual editing

If you’re at a more advanced stage, we can either incorporate or focus on practical palaeography, i.e. the ability to read Latin manuscripts. And if you can already read manuscripts and would like to learn how to edit a text, I will be more than happy to train you up using materials relevant to your research.

Prices

One-to-one tuition is £70/hour. Group teaching is £45/hour each for 2 people, £35/hour each for 3, or £30/hour each for 4. If your interests aren’t too niche and your schedule is flexible, I may be able to find a group for you. Sessions are standardly one hour, but can be anywhere between 30 minutes and 1¼ hours.

Testimonials

“This was some of the most wonderful teaching I have ever had. Mark is approachable, engaged, an absolute specialist in his domain, and overall a joy to talk to. I have learnt so much, and I have also gained a huge pleasure in the subject. You’d be lucky to have him as your tutor” – Katie (postdoc)
